Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion

Fans of Gen Urobuchi’s Puella Magi Madoka Magica series are no strangers to the world of adorable magical girls forever falling into a dark plot, and with the long-awaited third installment of the Madoka movies, Rebellion, those same fans will surely not be disappointed. A mixture of an enticing and exciting plot, mixed with the beautiful animation styles and art of studio SHAFT, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion will be sure to please past Madoka lovers, and even those new to the world of Gen “The Butcher” Urobuchi’s magical girls!

Plot: 8/10
Either new or old to the Madoka Magica scene, most viewers will begin their Rebellion journey rather confused, as usual, considering Gen’s unique writing style. This being said, knowing that Rebellion is the third movie within a series of films that follow the anime’s plot will certainly help in trying to grasp exactly what is happening. Rebellion follows a new, original, plot, unlike its’ predecessors. It is almost like the writers pulled out all the stops in making this film, which is such a treat for fans! With dark, and twisted, turns at every corner, it is almost impossible for even the most elitist of Madoka fans to predict what will happen next.

Quick Plot Review:
  • Unpredictable
  • Introduction of a new character: Nagisa
  • Dark, deep, and unique
  • Emotional
  • Everything answered, but still leaves questions.

Animation/Art: 9/10
SHAFT is notoriously known for their famous character head tilts, and there sure isn’t a shortage of them here. Rebellion brings about the best in cinematography animation, beautifully displaying the massive budget this movie was initially given. Colorful, sparkly, and just a bit quirky; the animation and backgrounds presented in this film are exactly what one would expect from the magical girl anime genre. The artworks, including character designs, are brilliant…only bringing forth even more love for your favorite characters from the original anime series. Facial expressions, and moods are flawlessly set, only drawing viewers into the plot line with even more force.

Quick Animation/Art Review:
  • Flawless animation reflecting a very large budget
  • Flashy and sparkly…exactly what you’d expect from a magical girl anime film
  • Transformation scenes are awesome
  • Mood setting is wonderful
  • Draws you more into the plot

Voice Acting/Cast: 10/10
The all-star cast from the original anime series, and first two movies, return for Rebellion! Just as moods are set with the art, the same can be said with the voicing of the characters. Catching every bit of emotion with their voices, the viewer cannot help but really feel everything the characters are going though. Every pitch matches perfectly, and there are no overly obnoxiously high-pitched characters!

Quick Voice Acting/Cast Review:
  • Capture emotion flawlessly
  • Great character matching
  •  No obnoxiously high-pitched characters

Should I watch it?

Rebellion is both a blessing and a curse to the Madoka fandom; the intense plotline created by some of anime’s best writers draws you in, and leaves you constantly wracking your brain trying to unravel the complicated emotions and dark twists being presented. The flawless art style, and animation, will leave you breathless and begging for more kick-butt magical girls! We definitely recommend this film to anyone and everyone within the Madoka fandom, and even those who are new to the genre…but we also highly recommend either watching the anime series, or previous two Madoka movies before tackling this giant.
